[Elecraft] [K3] S/N3050 RS232 port has no response

The advice I received from tech support was to check the KIO3 "daughter
board" for any open circuits, and then to check U1 on the KIO3A I/O
board. It is a small surface mount chip, very common, and if you can
try to replace it I would, because a replacement board is $115 plus
shipping. I just went through that!
I have now added a Tripplite DB-9 surge protector to the RS-232 port of
my K3, and made very sure that the computer and radio are connected to a
common ground. I think that the surge protector would be a useful
adjunct for any K3 - for $20 plus shipping it's a lot cheaper than
rteplacing the IO board.
