Yes, you can change the gain structure of your receiver.  If you want -20dB turn on the ATT, if you want plus 6dB put on the Pre, turn them both on and you've only cut -14dB..  My numbers may be off, but the theory is still there.  It's just about having the ability for variables in your adjustments.  Or you can just think of it as "a little less ATT"..
