Jim,
"It all depends". If you are using the K2/100, then the RF gain through
the TX chain is usually sufficient for the HC-4 and HC-5 elements. If
you are using the K2/10, then a microphone amplifier to make up for the
lower output of those mic elements is prudent. The respomse on the
lower bands will be sufficient, but for use on 15 meters and above, the
preamp may be needed.
Yes, you can configure the K2 microphone configuration header to use
most any microphone pinout. But you will need to procure or make an
adapter cable for any microphone that uses other than an 8 pin Fostor
connector.
See the KSB2 manual for the microphone configuration settings - it does
not specify the Heil microphones, so wire it for the Heil adapter that
you are using.
