[Elecraft] HRD connection to K3

I see some discussion of this topic in the past, but did not see a solution
to my situation.  Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.  

Hardware is an HP Pavilion mini-tower with dual-core processors.  I have
added a half-height Perle card that gives me two "real" serial ports.  It
came as a Vista 64 machine, but I changed it to Windows 7 thinking that
radio software developed for XP would be more likely to run.  (Not sure this
has turned out to be true.  Power-SDR is not happy with this setup, but
that's another subject.)

I had HRD V5 running OK, but didn't like the way it behaved.  So, I
uninstalled and installed V4.  Now it will not communicate with the K3, and
returns an error message that another application is using the port.  

I have re-booted to make sure nothing else was running in the background. 
Did not help.

This same serial connection works FB with nGenlogger, CW Skimmer and the K3
Utility.  

Any ideas out there?
