This is why I switched all of our computers (except the shack one
unfortunately - too much good ham software is Windows-only) to Linux. I'm
not saying Linux is 100% secure, but hackers hardly ever target it so in
practise it is.

On the Windows box I use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Again, it
isn't as secure as fanatics claim, but it is targeted much less often.

I also use Gmail instead of email clients, so any nasties I might get sent
are never downloaded on to my computer. Gmail has excellent spam and
phishing filters, and I don't think I have ever seen a dodgy email in my
Inbox.

Another thing you can do is switch your DNS servers to OpenDNS - basically,
use 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 in place of your ISP-provided domain
name servers. Should you be tricked into accessing a spoof website you'll be
sent to an OpenDNS page warning you about it instead. It's just an extra
level of protection. I put this into our network router so all our PCs use
it automatically.
