For about a week now I've been trying to figure out how to interface my K3
#2737 with the Palstar AT-Auto. Although the AT-Auto manual offers wiring
diagrams there a number of issues or concerns regarding which cables and how
to make an RS232 Y cable without doing any damage to the K3. E-mail to
Palstar went unanswered. In any event, Howard Z (N3ZH) introduced me to his
software that essentially creates a "virtual" serial Y connector. Thanks to
Howard Z and his N3ZH software I was able to get my K3 and AT-Auto in synch.
For those of you looking to do the same below is my step-by-step procedure:
(a) connect K3 to PC via RS232 ports. Get Com port#
(b) use the serial cable that cable with the AT-Auto and connect between
AT-Auto's RS232 and serial port on PC. Get Com port#. No need to purchase
separate cable.
(c) configure the AT-Auto for 9600 baud with 8N1.
(d) set the AT-Auto's radio configuration to Icom
(e) remove the reset jumper inside the AT-Auto
(d) download and install the N3ZH software
(e) configure the port settings for radio and AT-Auto
(f) set the radio as a TS2000. Note Howard has not yet coded the software
for the K3. The K3 and Kenwood use same protocols.
(g) turn on radio, turn on AT-Auto and start the N3ZH software.
works like a champ.
For giggles I launched HRD and DM780 through the N3ZH software. Works great
with one exception. Since the radio under the software is identified as a
TS2000 the radio control pane on HRD is for a TS2000. Once Howard codes his
software for the K3 this will be resolved.
No Y serial cable needed. No virtual ports needed to run HRD/DM780, N3ZH and
AT-Auto at same time.
Nice job Howard...thanks.
