For Windows, there is yet another choice that is both good and free of
cost - Microsoft Securities Essentials.
It seems to work in the background and so far has produced no false
positives, nor has it let any viruses into my computers. It does want
to do a scan occasionally, and updates daily with no interruption to my
normal activities.
