Barry,
Try disabling the ethernet port on the laptop, they are very good rfi creators.
Of course, if you need the network port for internet access, you cant do that and your basically screwed.

  Was playing in the 10m contest this weekend and had noise (like a dirty, 
  hashy carrier, similar to TV-generated noise) every 5-10 kHz as I tuned 
  the band.  When I turned my laptop off, it went away.

  My laptop is about 4 ft from the radio and about 25 ft from my balcony 
  dipole.  Any thoughts on how to decrease the noise?
