Oh, he surely got it all right. His computer or his ISP aren't likely
involved in any way. What happened to him can happen to anyone who has ever
sent an e-mail message to someone else or to a reflector, and probably will
at some time. I handle dozens of e-mails every day from a large number of
people in my work, and it's happened to me twice in the past two or three
years. One time I was locked out of the Elecraft system for a couple of days
because their anti-spam system couldn't tell that my e-mail address was
being spoofed. As fast as I unlocked access, it'd relock it because there
were still a flood of e-mails with my address spoofed being sent from some
unknown machine somewhere in the world out there.

When you send an e-mail direct to someone or to a reflector like this where
it's read by an unknown number of people, that e-mail address is stored the
receiving system's list of addresses and if that computer is infected the
entire list of e-mail addresses is transferred to yet another machine where
they are chosen at random as the "source" of junk e-mails, some containing
viri, others just stupid scams like that one.

The person whose computer gave up your e-mail address often is completely
unaware it happened, other than the fact that he/she isn't using a decent
anti-virus program and firewall or has it turned off.

It's the most basic and common sort of "identity theft".

-----Original Message-----
It has been brought to my attention that the "real" Dale Putnam is a FB
guy and a long time lister. I'm new to the Elecraft family. I
apologize to the "real" Dale, and the rest of the listers, for implying
that the 'real' Dale tried to scam me out of a KXB3080.

I looked his call up in QRZ.com and emailed him directly but I have
suppose there is no guarantee that email won't get hijacked also. I
hope the 'real' Dale at least sees this list entry.

Sorry for jumping the gun and thank you to everyone who brought this to
my attention.
