While I've also used a "worm" of solder, I generally just go for each pin in
succession with a fine tip and 0.015" solder. I don't even "wet" the solder
iron tip - it's wiped on the sponge after adding a bit to "tin" it - and
then I place the solder against where the pin goes into the pad and touch
that with the iron @700-750F until the solder melts - about 1 or 2 seconds.
If I get a bridge, a bit of solder wick clears it away easily but, owing to
the tendency of the solder to stay with the pin and pad that's actually
rare.

It's most important to use small solder; avoid the 0.031" that is commonly
used on through-hole parts.
