An important consideration for me (in choosing the K144XV) was the fact that the XV144 does not cover the entire 2 meter band; it has only 2 mHz bandwidth from 144.00 to 146.00 mHz. The K144XV automatically switches crystals so that it can cover the entire 144-148 mHz spectrum of the 2 meter allocation. If you are planning to work 2 meter repeaters in the upper half of the band, the XV144 is not a viable option.

That fact, combined with the portability improvement, made it an easy choice for me, with the only downside being the lower wattage output of the K144XV. However, the XV144 is recommended for only 5 watts output for high duty cycle FM and data, so there isn't really much difference. It's easy enough to find an external 2 meter amplifier that you can drive with the 10 watts output from the K44XV if you want more power.
