When I made my order last year my first though about that special RS232 to USB cable was that surely Elecraft was not going to sell a defective cable,so I included in the K3 order and like I said before its been working in all my three computers at home, different brands,PC's and laptop, after installed the drivers, all of them recognized the K3 port and worked with any software to control the radio.
Its professionally built and it works always.

Seriously though,
I think most of us ordered the KUSB out of convenience of not having to
search out a USB to RS232 cable - it is not something everybody carries,
rather than having to call and drive around looking for one.
I know if I went to order a $10.00 cable, it would have cost me another
$20.00 just to get it into my hands - so I guess I'm out $10.00 in
retrospect! Hey...@#$#%$!
The cable is of decent quality and I doubt if it has any special properties.
