[Elecraft] My Proposed K3 Configuration so far...

Hi, Robby:
I think you are being a little harsh, or at least being
black-and-white when grey is a more appropriate colour.
I have used USB-to-serial converters from three different
manufacturers with three different radios and three different computers.
Some work in some combinations and not in others and to some extent it is a
crap-shoot when you buy an adapter as to whether or not it will work with
your combination of equipment. Somewhere I have a link to an article that
discusses why this is so, but understanding it is above my pay grade. It
has a lot to do with the interface circuitry and firmware of the serial port
on the rig and USB port on the computer, working in combination with what is
in the adapter cable. The sun and the moon and the planets all need to line
up properly for these three elements to learn how to talk to each other. My
Elecraft USB-to-serial adapter worked with my K2 but it didn't work with the
K3 the first time either until I downloaded the latest chipset.
If a USB-to-serial cable does not work with any given combination of
radios and computers, it is not correct in my experience to say that there
is anything wrong with the cable per se. It would only be correct to say
that it doesn't work in that specific situation.

The KUSB is just a USB to RS-232. They nailed me for $40 for one because I
thought it was a special one for the K3. It didn't work. I later found one
for under $10 that works fine. Don't buy it.
Elecraft have some wonderful products and accessories. The KUSB just isn't
one of them.
