Hello
I presently have a pair of K3s. One of my dilemmas is that I am constantly hauling the rigs around between my house and a remote hamshack. Of course the K3 gets top billing and sits on the passenger seat of my pickup truck (rather than in the back with all the picks, shovels, and tower sections etc.) I know others use their K3s in portable operations as well. The last thing I want is to damage it through any unforseen accident or goof-up. My brother K0ZK has his K3 and rigged up a plastic case from Pelican I think, that works quite well. He made his own foam spacers.
I recently took a gamble and ordered a military aluminum case from a surplus supplier, and was overjoyed at what I received. It is a heavy wall olive drab aluminum carrying case with a carrying handle and six latching clamps. The case lid is rubber gasketted and is waterproof with a pressure relief button as well. It measures 13 x 14 x 9" inside, but the cool part is that it comes with foam rubber inserts on the inside. I managed to cut mine with a sharp serrated steak knife, so that the K3 fits in there perfectly. The top cover simply requires that the foam rubber insert is reversed, or you could hack that one up to allow headphones or other soft accessories. I reversed mine and the protection is now complete, with foam rubber all around the radio. I could throw it off a bridge into a river, or drop it in a rock quarry, and the K3 would come out unscathed.
My particular container was made by ZERO Corporation, noted for making high end aluminum cases. Other manufacturers also made these cases. The surplus place also sells a plastic version for $10 less. Both types originally housed night vision equipmenmt. I just thought some other K3 owners might be interested in these.

Item is #1384 in their print catalog, or #1385 for the plastic case. "U.S. G.I. Aviator's Container" Cost was $29.95 or $19.95 for the plastic one. I have no connection to Coleman's at all. I just was amazed at how this fits the K3 perfectly with just a little cutting of the foam rubber. Check it out. I am not sure how many cases they have.
