I recall that either Rudy or someone else has shown that a "gullwing"
arrangement where the elevated radial has a sloping section that goes down
to a ground-level feedpoint works well, so you wouldn't have add to the mast
in order to use it. AFAIK the main drawback with a single elevated radial is
that it will be noticeably directive, maybe not a drawback in every
situation. When I used two elevated radials, one formed a half circle around
the house, under the eaves, and one followed one side of the house and from
there went close to the property line to a pole on the back fence. That way
neither wire got in the way at all, but every lot is different. Anyway, I am
not advising against a good buried radial system, but I do suggest that when
you have put it in to an extent you are comfortable with, just string up an
elevated radial in a temporary manner to compare it to. The performance of
an elevated radial is less subject to all kinds of design considerations, so
it is a rather good standard against which to compare. (I am assuming you
trim the length to have a resonant system. If you use more than one, and
want full benefits thereof, you need some way to compare currents in them,
as any difference in geometry tends to produce very unequal currents in
equal wire lengths.)
