Volcanoes also provide some real-time radio effects too. One day I was
listening (on 20 I think) and heard the QRN level rise dramatically. 

I had some errands to run so I 'pulled the switch' and headed downtown.
Right away I noticed a strange vertical cloud to the north. Mt. St. Helens
was erupting clouds of ash again. This was years after the big eruption, but
she still spewed high clouds of ash into the atmosphere from time to time,
plainly visible from my QTH about 60 miles away (I lived near Portland,
Oregon then). 

Those plumes of ash are powerful generators of static electricity.
