The article that was claimed to be unreadable was a top posted article
quoting a top posted article. Top posting was not an issue here. The
actual issue, was that, at least in the digest, a number of articles
were posted with Content-Type: text/plain headers, but containing
invalid HTML, which, on any reasonably compliant email program display
as raw HTML.
However Don's real issue seems to have been with people who fail to trim
properly. Top posting almost guarantees that people will fail to prune,
which is one of the reasons why the digests are so large. If you have
to exit after each email or terminate reading by deleting, top postings
hides this problem. If you are reading the digest, or have an email
reader that pages across message boundaries, failure to prune forces one
to wade through the whole back thread and, particular in digests, can
make it difficult to find the next thread. IE's attach original mode is
even worse, as Thunderbird displays the attached message as though it
were an independent article, so one has to look very carefully to find
the next real article.
Incidentally, I consider email posted with only HTML to be a strong spam
indicator and all postings with HTML variants to be newbie indicators.
They also contribute to the high number of bytes on this list.
For once, I am deliberately posting this badly, quoting the entire back
thread including footers added by the reflector. Unfortunately, as I'm
replying from a MIME digest, I can't add a copy of the footers added on
the way out to me.
