Hi All,
Had a few problems with the K3 during Field Day. Temperature was about 100
degrees outside. The radio was under a canopy. I had just installed the
KAT3 about 2 days previous. The KAT3 had been mailed in a tight box. The
cardboard shipping box had a hump in it where the toroids were. When I
pulled out the board the smaller toroids had been all pushed flat into each
other and where touching each other. I straightened them out a little bit
so they did not touch each other, but the crushing from the box had
apparently stretched the turns so the toroids were off the board a little
bit. My first thought was to resolder the toroids but when I flipped the
board and saw the relays I figured I would just install the board. During
casual testing the KAT3 appeared to work extremely well.
When I set up on Saturday at the site someone immediately came over and
insisted on trying the rig on 20 meters CW. We had been on 40 M and 20 M
phone and the tuner worked as expected. However, when I tried to tune in
the CW portion of 20m, the display would alternate between two dashes and an
SWR number, but the number varied greatly. The Actual SWR going into the
rig was about 5:1. I then got a TXG error. I turned off the rig and when I
turned it back on I got a PL1 error. I then turned off the rig. About 2
hours later I decided to try the rig again and it was working on all bands.
Later however the rig would tend to start putting out only about 30 Watts
using normal mic gain and comp settings of 20. By turning the radio off and
then back on the problem went away and we got a full 100 Watts out again.
I will probably try a "CONFIG:VCO MD" tonight. Any suggestions? I am off a
few revisions on the firmware and will update that also. Can the KAT3 cause
output filter problems and thus the TXG error?
