No, the AGC has no effect one way or the other.
So far it seems reducing the audio level below about 9 o'clock or reducing
the RF gain below about 1 o'clock or increasing MON above about 35
significantly reduces the thumping on both K3's here.
As I said earlier it is not a major issue, but would be nice to eliminate.
The three conditions found so far to eliminate the thumping are not
practical from an operating point of view.
Maybe I don't have something set up properly?
