NO,  this is not what is going on.   If the sidetone monitor is turned up to a good fairly loud position,  you will not hear the thumping.  IF it is turned to what I would call a comfortable level for my ears,  then the thumping occurs. 

It is not dependent on AF gain being set excessively high,  but is rather dependent on the monitor setting is relation to the AF gain.
