+If the filter response varies across the passband, which it does, the ALC
+will vary the amount of gain used to try to keep the RF level to the amount
+it is set at, whether the signal is being generated near the edge of the
+passband or at the center. This is important to the PSK31 operator who does
+not want to tune every signal to the center of the passband sweet spot
+efore hitting TX in order to get maximum power out.

I use the ALIGN function in MIXW or the similar functions in LOGGER or DM780
to set my rig to a tone of 1500 hz for both TX and RX. That way I can use
the filters for receive and the same gain level for TX as I click on PSK31
stations in my band pass. I did this with my IC-746PRO for the same reason
as any ham grade filters I have ever seen have gain variations with changes
in frequency. Three DB may not seem like much in the bandpass of a filter
but it is a lot in terms of the output of the transmitter. You set for fifty
watts and clean and find one hundred watts and distortion.
I have been using ALIGN for four years and the gain / frequency problem
has become a non issue.
