The K3 doesn't need any interface... if you use the line in and line out
on the rear panel the audio levels in and out are independent of the
front panel AF control, and the mic level as used on SSB (assuming you
use DATA A for data). The only possible advantage of the external
interface is to use it as an outboard sound card which avoids issues
with computer generated beeps from other programs, but these aren't
necessarily a big deal.
I use a pair of 3.5mm to 3.5mm "stereo" leads to/from my PC sound card
and it works just fine with Ham Radio Deluxe and its DM780 program.

Anyone using this combo with the ACC (15-pin) instead of the mic jack?
DX Engineering, and well as TigerTronics, sell all kinds of pre-made
cables but only a mic cable for the K3. I'd rather connect to the ACC,
as I do with the IC-7800, where the audio signal is not dependent on the
AF volume or mic gain settings.
