Take a look at the website: http://www.markup.co.nz/palettizer/palettizer.htm.  Now click on one color from each column to see the marked differences.  By spending just 5 or 10 minutes on that website, we can learn a great deal.  The K3 example is closest to the red foreground and the grey background.  Take a look at that.  Now examine the red foreground and the silver background.  Although these color choices don't exactly reproduce the K3 colors, I think we'll all agree that the second pair works better.  If I'm wrong and some people actually prefer the first pair, then perhaps we need to look at other pairs which produce consensus on fine legibility.  I certainly believe, for instance, that very few people without vision disabilities would have problems with the K3 LCD display.
