Elwood,
You are really asking if an even lower threshold would be more effective.
The answer is that "it all depends" on the type of noise. A gated noise
blanker will work very well on impulse type noise such as gasoline
engine ignition noise, but it will not do much for the 'popcorn' type
noise sources.
You could certainly try making the substitution and see what happens.
If it does not work out well for you, you can always go back to the 1N4148.
