A potential problem (no pun intended) is that the equipment you are 
working on may have a potential difference to you.  The idea of ESD is 
to ensure that you, the equipment you are working on and your tools all 
end up at the same potential, hence the mat.  Your free ESD wrist strap 
will give you some protection but is not the ideal solution.
