When I travel with my KX-1 I have an antenna that works quite well on all 4 bands.
I bought a 50 ft roll of speaker wire (a.k.a. zip cord) from Radio Shack - it turned out to be 51 1/2 ft long, but I don't think the length is very critical. I un-zipped all but about a foot of the wire, and I use one leg as a counterpoise, lying on the ground or sometimes hanging out a hotel room window and then draped along the ground. The other leg, I get as high in the air as I can. Depending on where I am, sometimes it's a sloper going up to a tree, sometimes it's a reverse sloper going from a 3rd floor hotel room window to a bush in the parking lot, sometimes it's sort of an inverted L, etc. Most recently in a campground in Chaco Canyon, NM it was an inverted U going over a big boulder near my tent. The KX-1 ATU loads it to an indicated 1.3:1 SWR or better on all 4 bands, and I've made lots of contacts with it.
