Are you on 40m, or is the VFO just set to a frequency in the 40m band?

You can tune across multiple bands on the dial, but the K2 will still be 
configured for the band on which you started.  If you have got the bands 
  out of step with the frequency, try doing a direct frequency entry, 
or, since you presumably haven't stored anything in the memories, 
recalling an appropriate memory.
