The amount of isolation has a lot to do with individual ear canal shape. I
have very rectangular canals, and none of the Shure or Sennheiser universal
fit tips (foam, soft cones, silicone cones, or three-flange) come close in
my case to the isolation of the well fitted custom molds provided by Live
Wires. I also have some Westone custom tips that fit on the Shure series of
IEM's; they are marginally better, but not nearly as good as the full-ear
fit of the Live Wires custom molds. On the other hand, many professional
musicians are pleased with the universal fit tips, I believe because their
ear canals accommodate these tips better than mine do.

BTW, I have no personal interest in Live Wires IEM's at all; they just
happen to have provided a solution that works extremely well for me for both
radio and live sound engineering. And as a side note, more than 50% of the
40 or so professional musicians I work with on a regular basis now use Live
Wires or one of the other full-ear-fit custom molded IEM's such as
Sensaphonics, Ultimate Ears or Westone. This is in no way a slam on
Etymotic as I continue to hear and see good things written about them,
though don't think they offer custom molds.
