David and Dick got it right.

It takes a lot of graphics processing power to make a general purpose
LCD look good. If you've got an LCD monitor on your computer there is a
point at which your current video card will not drive a larger monitor.
I ran into this when I upgraded to a 22" wide screen LCD. The old,(2
years) video card wouldn't drive it to a decent resolution.

The "iconized" LCD's take a lot less programming as the areas
specifically setup are either on or off. You can't anticipate everything
someone might like to see so it's a trade off.

On my K2 the only way I know I'm using VOX is the flashing U or L icon.
If it ain't flashing I know I'm running PTT mode.

| Other LCDs have custom "icons". The VFO A and B areas use
seven-segments and
| a dot sort of construction that gives you numbers and most characters
(and i

O or

| close to d5P (d five p).
|
| Other areas like the S-Meter area appear to be custom icons. There isn't
| any programming to draw the scale of the S-meter. It's "burned in" to the
| glass. The programming can choose to illuminate it or leave it dark.
|
| I don't know who the custom LCD vendor was for the Elecraft K3, but
here's a
| web page for one company that provides custom LCD solutions:
