No, it does take a tiny bit longer as you describe. The advantage is 
that you always get the same setup, whereas with I/II you get whatever 
state you last left the 'preset' (I or II) in.

If you can keep from twisting knobs and just switch between I and II 
then it is faster and easier to use them.

Personally, I find that I often make adjustments by turning the knobs 
and then I am surprised at the state that I left the preset in. So I 
like the ALT1-NORM-ALT2 system.

Maybe for the next contest I will try to train myself to leave the knobs 
alone and use I/II.
