No you don't. The KIO2 adds no essential functionality for transceiving data
modes, though it does provide the ability for software that supports it to
display the actual frequency in use.

To transmit you need a cable from the line output with something like a 50:1
resistive attenuator to reduce the audio to a suitable level for the mic
input. You will also need some way for the computer to work the K2's PTT,
since the K2 VOX is not sensitive enough to trip on the low audio levels
needed for a clean PSK signal. This means that you'll need a simple
transistor switch driven by one of the control lines (DTR, RTS) on your PC's
serial port. Most data mode programs contain instructions to do this.

If you don't want to make a transistor switch then a serial connection using
the KIO2 allows certain programs (MixW is one) to control TX/RX using
software commands instead of the PTT.
