One thing to consider is how the new computer will communicate with
all
those wonderful external things you want/need to control.
Many newer computers, particularly laptops, seem to lack serial ports.
So, if the computer only has USB ports, the devices you want to
use with it will need USB ports.
If you try a USB to serial converter, some are better than others,
meaning
some external serial boxes will accept the serial data from the
converter
and some won't.  You may have to try several to find a happy solution.
