I found Eric's discussion at http://www.elecraft.com/K3/Roofing_Filters.htm
most helpful when I faced these questions.

Ruben,

>From my experience.....and I use a lot of CW and I am also into RTTY and
PSK with some SSB contesting thrown in......

I would get the 500 Hz CW filter for RTTY, and use the stock filter SSB
filter for everything else The stock filter will do PSK very well and of
course SSB. But, when it comes to the RTTY mode, I would get the 500 Hz
filter. You could use the stock filter and narrow the bandwidth down, but
from my experience RTTY is a joy with the 500 Hz Filter

Now, I got the 5 pole filters...which are cheaper...and have found them to
be quite adequate so far.

That is my opinion....others may disagree.

In our day and age it seems that Common Sense is in short supply. If you
don't have any Common Sense - get some Common Sense and use it. If you
can't find any Common Sense, ask for help from somebody who has some Common
Sense. Is Common Sense divine?
