[Elecraft] Transmitter gain calibration ?

Three of us locals got to discussing our K3's.
I got chosen to ask the dumb question.
None of us have the faintest idea what the Transmitter Gain calibration
does.
There is nothing to tweak (or if so what to tweak or it's left out of
manual).
So what does it do?
What if the power on an external wattmeter happens to disagree with the 50
watts dialed in?
In my case, the ACOM1000 wattmeter is indicating 38 watts when the K3 is
showing 50 in this "calibration phase" on 6M. Though not a standard,
being different by 25% where the other bands agree within about 5% seems
odd.
Enlightenment please.
