I do this all the time, but I don't use iTunes to manage my iPod :-) The 
trick is almost certainly to convert the mp3 to AAC.

I also suggest that you find a copy of Chuck Adams K7QO code practice 
course - you can get the CD for the cost of a mailer from the FISTS 
office, or find the .iso online at various places (including my website) 
and burn your own CD. I used this material (on my iPod) to learn to head 
copy, listening while walking to/from the commuter train. It starts slow 
and builds up to 20WPM.

The ARRL stuff is also good, and it is interesting to use it to get used 
to fast speeds - I often load up the files from a single day and play 
them fastest to slowest. After listening to the 40, 35, 30 and 25 wpm 
files, 20wpm sounds slow!
