I have a W9GR audio DSP kit that I built years ago. To give you an idea
how long ago, it uses a TI TMS320C10 DSP! (The invoice is dated
9/16/92.)
Despite that, and despite the fact that it uses only 8-bit digitization,
it works amazingly well. I found the LMS noise reduction works great on
signals more than a few dB above the noise level. It is true that weak
signals are not enhanced, but they don't seem to be degraded either.
With only 8 bits of dynamic range it is important to keep the audio
level set as close to full scale as possible.
The unit has several modes, including noise reduction, multi-tone notch,
and bandpass filters of various bandwidths. It's fun to listen to CW
with the notch filter turned on. You only hear the first few
milliseconds of each dot or dash before the LMS algorithm locks on. It
sounds like key clicks.
