I wonder if the anti-static mats and wrist straps are something which
Elecraft might like to provide with the kits, assuming they could buy
them in quanity and sell them for a more reasonable price. 

Yes, these mats do provide insurance aganist potentially very costly
damage. However, in terms of technology and materials these things are
a real swindle. If the K3 was valued on the same scale as these rubber
mats, wire and alligator clips, it would probably cost about $25,000.
