In discussing the advantage of a short dipole over a short vertical, I
neglected to point out that is ONLY true of the Buddipole on 40 meters! The
Buddipole is 44 feet long! (Two 22 foot arms when fully extended.) So it's
only slightly shortened on 40 and is a full sized dipole on the higher
frequencies!

Its only drawback on the higher frequencies is the low elevation above
ground. The portable mast is only 8 feet high. Even so, it will put out a
very usable high angle signal in the horizontal orientation.

Of course, if you can put it up higher - on a balcony for instance -things
improve very quickly.

A neat trick many portable operators have used when on hilly terrain is to
place their horizontal antenna on the edge of a cliff or on a steep slope.
The main lobe of a low horizontal antenna is directly opposite the earth. If
you can arrange for the earth to be behind it, you'll have substantial gain
toward the horizon in the opposite direction!
