I had the same experience following a mother board failure, so Microsoft
isn't all evil.

Unless the policy has changed, and I seriously doubt it, Microsoft allows
you to install XP on three different CPUs. When and if you try to load it on
a forth, the activation process will fail and tell you to call customer
service. I had a motherboard fail and was already on #3. I called customer
service and told them that the old machine was dead and the rep actually
reset me to zero (!) so after loading a new machine I have two left. I was
prepared for a battle but I was boviously quite surprised. Either Microsoft
is trying to work with people who play by the rules (and don't steal
software) or I was just lucky and got the right rep.
In any event, you have nothing but your time to lose by trying to load
another machine and also to ask for help if you need it.

I have another off topic question about Windows XP. I have a legal copy on a
generic computer that I bought sometime ago. It came with the CD and the
sticker on the outside with the serial number. Can I load this copy on
another computer and get it registered with Microsoft? I have heard horror
stories about registering with Microsoft. I paid for and own this copy of
XP, but can I move it?

I work in a VERY big bank - we have over 80,000 desktops and we use XP
- at some point we will have to move on to Vista but it will be some

It was just 8 years ago that Intel asked me to develop training modules on
how to use Widows Xp some of their call center staff. There was a huge
amount of angst over what problems Xp might cause. Drivers were near the top
of the list of concerns.
That was a long time ago in the lifespan of most technology. And Xp has a
number of years of Microsoft support ahead of it on current systems, such as
the one I'm using now. Even after that, it'll live on. I've got one machine
still running Windows Me, and it runs quite nicely (for a machine with a 500
MHz Pentium III and a few hundred k of RAM ). I know others still running
various versions of DOS!
Fortunately new software does not immediately displace everything else,
except in the minds of those hardy folks who choose to be "early adopters".
Their experiences work out the bugs for the rest of us who merely want a
reliable tool to use.
I'm happy to be an early adopter of new communications technology. It's what
interests me.
I'll leave the software for those who enjoy doing that.
