Hi Don,
Well as it transpired, I could not go to bed without swapping front 
panel display boards.  The replacement board provides a rock solid 
display - no spurious flicking into Menu mode and back again.  So it 
into the display board with a microscope to examine systematically every 
soldered joint!

Many thanks for your advice.  Will keep the group posted.
