Had the same 'issue' ... it is a layer 8 issue... ;o)

Try CONFIG => 2 TONE ...  check this to be OFF
Thanks to Gary from Elecraft for this info !

After that you will be able to adjust mic gain.

When in mode LSB Mic doesn't adjust mic gain.  VFO B displays "TN1 x.x" 
when I turn the Mic pot.  Seems odd.
