I'm the author of the K3 Utility. Dave, you certainly got my attention with
this one!
Right after your post I installed SpySweeper on two of my systems, the
development system that I use to build the K3 Utility and its setup, and a
test system that was used to install the K3 Utility from the Elecraft web
site.
I ran a full SpySweeper scan on both systems. SpySweeper found "no Malware"
on either system. I've attached the screen I got from the development
system that has at least four copies of the setup program you ran.
Having said that, I can't explain your SpySweeper results. But I'll hazard
a guess:
The K3 Utility does contain FTP code used to copy firmware files from
Elecraft's server to your Firmware Folder. If a scanner like SpySweeper
looks for patterns that match FTP code (or analyzes the OS services I use),
it might flag the K3 Utility as a program that "reaches out". The K3
Utility does not transfer files from your PC to Elecraft (or anywhere else).
It uses FTP to search a directory and get files, copying data from Elecraft
to your computer and not the reverse.
I also ran a virus scan on one system using AVG and the other using a CA
product. Both scans indicated no virus found.

For some reason my Spysweeper reports the latest updater (1.0.11.19) as
trying to install the adware program "Give4Free". It may be a false positive
and a problem with the anti-spyware program rather than Elecraft software.
Anyone else getting a similar problem?
