[Elecraft] Can a R5 vertical be ground mounted??

I used to have one. Going from memory I believe Cushcraft recommended something like six to eight feet above the ground.

I haven't run any analysis, but think that the counterpoise rods 
should be isolated above the ground a bit. K7LXC and N0AX did 
comparison testing of several verticals and presented the results at 
the Dayton Hamvention in 2000 (copies of the report are available 
from .

One of the models they tested was the R8, which is built in a similar 
manner to the R5. I recall they had the base mounted about 7 feet 
above a ground screen. The results were (in my opinion) better 
overall than for the other types they tested. I have a similar Hy- 
Gain AV640 mounted on a pipe at 13 feet and am quite satisfied with 
the performance of that installation.
