Pardon my ignorance but I don't understand how your station layout would be
improved with an external ATU. The KAT3 occupies the same space inside the
K3 as the KANT3. An external tuner would result in more, not less, space
being taken outside the radio (albeit remotely mounted), plus you'd have
another cable to route.
There may be something about having a 6m beam that works better with a
remote ATU and that's fine -- I just don't understand how this is all driven
by limited desk space. The same amount of desk space is taken up with the
ATU inside the K3 as outside.

Instead of small I should have said modest, i.e. 100w max from a K3 (I hope)
running barefoot feeding a 100ft doublet at 27 feet squashed into a garden
90ftx 30ft including the house. The proximity of neighbours prevents more than
100 watts. With this system I have already worked most continents on SSB.
The rig has an output impedance of 50ohm into 30ft of 50ohm cable so the
place to fit the ATU and balun is between the 50ohm cable and the open wire
feeder of the doublet. The shack is in an upstairs front bedroom and the
feedpoint is at the back of the house. And this is nonnegotiable.
Hence the need to have the ATU remote from the rig and the antenna
switching in the rig so that a second 50ohm cable can feed a 50ohm yagi direct not
needing an ATU. OK yes this does introduce the need to weather proof the ATU
but there are several on the market already some suitable even for small boats
in far more extreme conditions.
My wish was for an ATU designed to work specifically with the K3 taking
advantage in the auto tune facilities with a one touch action.

Still waiting my K3
