Al and all,

Contrary to your speculation, there is nothing in the control section
('flow of info on data bus') that would cause your problem.

The beauty of digital signals is that they either work or they do not
work - there is no in between state.

Most intermittent problems are due to an unsoldered connection. They
can work fine for several years only to raise their ugly heads at the
most inappropriate time. The relays rarely fail because they are the
type with wiping (self cleaning) contacts - but once in a great while I
do find a bad one.

The only answer I know is that you must hunt carefully for that elusive
bad connection - sometimes it can be narrowed down to a single stage and
the rest will be easy, but often that is difficult until you can
reliably re-create the failure. Any troubleshooting must be done while
it is *not* working properly, and that is why I *hate* intermittents.
