[Elecraft] K2 in the Stew Perry

While most recent attention on this reflector has been on the K3, the Stew
Perry 'test reminded me how well the K2 performs. My K2 #1429 got less than
two hour's service last night because of a belated Christmas party at our
home, but I worked over 100 stations with 100W and a home-brewed inverted L
(36 radials under 3 inches of topsoil and 3 feet of snow).

I was able to hear and work G4, UA2, DL5, HB9, CT1, KH6, and KV4. The best
S/N ratio seemed to come from a combination of FL4 at 200 Hz, ALC off, the
AF control at full on (clockwise) while adjusting the RF (IF) control for a
comfortable volume, and the AF filter on the second position.

I think I'll stick with my K2s for a while until I get a chance to hear an
actual K3 in operation. They certainly do outperform my first rx ... a
regenerative Knight Kit Ocean Hopper :)

BTW, I had a CW QSO with W1BB sometime in the early 1960s, and he sent me
his QSL card along with a large packet of material about his accomplishments
on Top Band. Dang, it has gone to the same place in the sky as my baseball
card and comic book collections from the 1950s :( I think me Ma throwed 'em
all out....
