[Elecraft] KX1 Displays ' u 7 ' when I hit the Band button on 40M

Jack,

You have your KX1 in Upper Sideband mode - so nothing is wrong at all.
If you want to change it to 'nor' (normal = CW), then press the two 
outer buttons together.  See the manual.
