  That's because there is only one analog protocol - AMPS, the
  original ATT/Bell Labs one!   My carrier (Verizon Wireless) has
  notified us a while back that they will be dropping analog
  service sometime next spring.

  When you get into the digital world, there are at least three
  incompatible protocols - TDMA, CDMA. and GSM.  If there are
  several carriers using the same digital protocol, the chances
  are that one is leasing spectrum space from one of the three
  majors (ATT/Cingular, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile).

  My Kenwood R-5000 HF communications receiver can decode FM.  My
  Elecraft K2 can't.
