Howdy Folks,
Twenty meters was noisy and a tough band to operate. Forty meters made
up for all that in spades. The second net ran the entire hour and we had
fun. The first net was work but then I got to feed a cat who was bugging
me about starving to death in front of my eyes. I think he went to acting
school because he convinces me and I know when I fed him last! Crazy cat.
My early afternoon was used by another ARES workshop. We got the 23
centimeter system passing TCP/IP traffic. It was much like hooking up an
Ethernet cable and networking a computer system. The odd part was the
link was via radio. It looks like we could hook the CAT5 from the radio
to a wireless hub and use it as an access point for the rest of our
wireless computer net. Then we could send files via drag and drop across
the network to the radio over the air waves to a linking radio and dive
into the Internet. Possibilities keep popping up in my head. I think I
am being drawn by the dark side though ;)
Tonight's nets were enjoyable. Now to find someone to act as NCS for
next week. If I cannot find anyone by Wednesday I will cancel next
Sunday's nets. If you would like to try it please write me an email and I
can give you the scripts. Or we could get a few people to do it around
the continent and pool their time and radio resources. Acting as NCS is
not hard and is a lot of fun. It is a real hoot to be the source of the
pileup and work your way through it all. The 'hail' signs have sped the
process immensely so the wait for any given op is less. Please try your
hand at being an NCS for ECN. Just keep notes on who you worked and write
me an email. Or we could have a number of local nets around the country
if that makes it any easier. Just because Tom and I are off to the Ozarks
having a good time does not mean you can't have fun too. Please?

Dale, K6PJV, checked in with 500 milliwatts. I told him 559 and get an
attenuator :) He is trying to see what the minimum power which will
connect us between Northern California and Northern Oregon. It is fun.
Ron, WB3AAL, is consistently 5 watts and is surprised when I hear him.
Rick, KL7CW, has a fine signal with his KX1 from Palmer, Alaska so I think
QRP works. Dale wants to see how far QRPp he can go. If the band is
good, like forty was tonight, it is simply amazing what a few milliwatts
will do.
Another busy week ahead but it will be a fun one. I'll get to meet a
number of you at OzarkCon and I'll get out on my first trip in quite a
while. Hopefully Sam and my nephew Mike will get along fine and they will
not tear up the house while I am gone. Remember the NCS hat is still
available for a willing party for next week's nets. Think about it and
write me if you want to try it. You guys had to break me in so you may
have to do the same with someone else. Please be as kind to them as you
have been to me.
Thank you and 73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)
