As others have said, the simplest solution is a USB
<--> Serial adapter. However, it should be noted that
some of these devices may not work well with some
laptops, as some laptops may not provide enough power
to the device. In this case, a powered USB hub may be
required. 

There have been a number of Posts on this subject on
the HRD Forum.

Just something to keep in mind.

PS: One source of USB <--> serial adapters is
newegg.com. Their prices are generally much better
than the big box stores.
